In October, the final version of Profile T for advanced video streaming was released. With this new Profile, ONVIF has responded to the growing demand for high resolution and 4K video surveillance by providing support for H.265 video compression. ONVIF believes H.265 will eventually replace the widely adopted H.264, heightening the limits of today’s existing infrastructure and storage capabilities of surveillance systems.
Profile T ultimately provides support for both H.264 and H.265, specifications which allow users and systems designers to build future capabilities into an existing system and implement newer technologies over time. With increased bandwidth requirements for high resolution cameras, supporting H.265 video compression means that Profile T supports high definition video, and in many cases, reduces storage needs by nearly half.
